Frank Kurtis fue sin duda el constructor americano mas importante durante las dos décadas siguientes a la II contienda mundial. Con una larga experiencia en la fabricación de coches de carreras por encargo, Kurtis decidió en 1948 realizar un bólido de diseño propio. Completó el proyecto con elementos íntegramente americanos: motor Offenhauser de 4 cilindros y 4,5 litros mejorado hasta obtener 380 CV y su chasis con las mas avanzadas soluciones mecánicas del momento. En 1949 el bólido fue inscrito por la propia fabrica como el Kurtis Kraft Special en el Campeonato Nacional americano de la AAA. Con Johnnie Parsons al volante ganó 5 carreras y quedo segundo en otras tantas, obteniendo el Campeonato. Ese mismo año, Parsons quedó segundo en las 500 Millas de Indianápolis, prueba cumbre del automovilismo deportivo americano, por detrás de Bill Holland y su Blue Crown Especial.
En 1950 la mítica carrera de Indianápolis fue incluida por la FIA en el campeonato Mundial de F-1 como el G.P. de los EE.UU. Esto generó cierta polémica por las diferencias técnicas y deportivas entre EE.UU. y Europa. Los equipos del mundial, en su mayoría europeos, como protesta no acudieron a la cita que fue disputada solo por equipos americanos. El Kurtis-Offy fue inscrito como el Wynn’s Friction Proofing Special. Tras una complicada carrera que tuvo que ser finalizada por la lluvia a pocas vueltas del final, Parsons se adjudico la victoria a una media de mas de 200 km. /h. así como el record de vuelta rápida.
En su evolución técnica los sucesivos Kurtis ganaron casi todas las competiciones americanas durante la década siguiente, llegando a copar las tres primeras plazas de las 500 Millas de Indianápolis en varias ocasiones. Finalmente la marca americana desapareció tras su retirada de la competición a finales de los ’60.

Frank Kurtis was the most important American constructor during the two decades between the late 1940’s and the 1960’s. With a long experience in the manufacture of racing cars for others, around 1948 Kurtis decided to make a fireball of his own design. This project was completed with all American components, using a four cylinder in line 4.5 litre Offenhauser engine improved to 380 hp, plus his own advanced chassis with all the latest mechanical refinements of the era.
In 1949 the fireball was registered by them as the Kurtis Kraft Special in the American National Championship of the AAA. With Johnnie Parsons as driver they won the Championship, winning five races and coming second in another five. In the same year Parsons came second to Bill Holland (Blue Crown Spl.) in the Indianapolis 500, the most prestigious event in America.
In the 1950’s the mythical Indianapolis race was included by the FIA in the new F-1 World Championship as the USA Grand Prix. This generated a conflict between the rest of the teams – mostly European – due to the differences in the sport and the technical specifications. Thus only US teams raced, and the
Kurtis-Offy was registered and raced as the Wynn’s Friction Proofing Spl. After a hard race that was ended by rain a few turns before the finish, Parsons was awarded victory at an average speed of 129.39 mph (around 200 km/h) and also achieved the record of the fastest lap.
Successive Kurtis Kraft cars won most of the national U.S. races for open wheel cars in the next decade, including taking the first three places in the Indianapolis 500 on several occasions. Finally the American brand disappeared after they withdrew from the competition at the end of the 1960’s.

Frank Kurtis gehoerte zu den bedeutensden amerikanischen Konstrukteuren der 40er bis 60er Jahre. Dank der langen Erfahrung in der Konstruktion von Fahrzeugen, fasste Kurtis 1948 den Entschluß zum Bau eines eigenen Rennwagens. Das Projekt bestand vollständig aus amerikanischen Erzeugnissen.
Als Motor wurde ein auf 380PS gesteigerter Reihenvierzylinder der Marke Offenhauser mit 4,5 Liter Hubraum verwendet, der in ein selbst entwickeltes Chassis eingebaut und mit den besten Rennteilen der Zeit kombiniert wurde. 1949 startete der «Fireball» als Kurtis Kraft Special bei der American National Championship des AAA. Mit Jonnie Parsons am Steuer konnte die Meisterschaft, d.h. 5 Rennen als Sieger und weitere 5 als Zweitplazierter, gwonnen werden. Im gleichen Jahr belegte Parsons hinter Bill Holland (Blue Crown Spl.) den 2. Platz bei den berühmten 500 Meilen von Indianapolis.
1950 war das 500 Meilen Renen von Indianapolis zugleich US Grand Prix und Wertungslauf zur neuen Formel 1 Weltmeisterschaft der FIA. Aufgrund unterschiedlicher technischen Bestimmungen entwicklete sich die Austragung zu einem Konflikt zwischen den amerikanischen und europaeischen Teams.
Am Ende nahmen nur US-Rennwagen am Grand Prix teil, den Parsons im Kurtis-Offy unter der Bewerbung «Wynn’s Friction Proofing Spl.» als Sieger beenden konnte. Obwohl das Rennen kurz vor Ende wegen Regens abgebrochen wurde, erreichte Parsons eine Durchschnittgeschwindigkeit von ca.200 km/h und fuhr zudem die schnellste Rennrunde!
Nach und nach gewannen Kurtis Kraft Wagen immer oefter bei nationalen Rennen für Formelwagen in den USA, und konnten sogar noch mehrmals die ersten 3 Plaetze beim 500 Meilen Rennen von Indianapolis belegen. Gegen Ende der 60er Jahre hat sich die Marke vom Rennsport zurückgezogen.
